Wrocław Tech has once again been ranked among the world’s top 1,000 universities in the Academic Ranking of World Universities. Wrocław Tech is the only university from Wrocław included in the ranking and has climbed to 735th place in terms of research publications.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), commonly known as the Shanghai Ranking, assesses more than 2,500 universities from around the world every year.

However, results are published only for the top 1,000 institutions. In 2026, Wrocław University of Science and Technology was once again included in this group, retaining its position in the 901–1,000 band.

A total of seven Polish higher education institutions were ranked, with Wrocław Tech the only one representing Wrocław.

A leap in research output

The university recorded a marked improvement in the PUB indicator, which measures research publication output. Wrocław Tech is now ranked 735th in the world in this category, up as many as 78 places from the previous edition.

The indicator covers research articles indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index databases within Web of Science. The 2026 edition analysed publications from 2025.

All Unite! members in the top 1,000

All universities belonging to the European university alliance Unite!, of which Wrocław Tech is a member, were also ranked among the world’s top 1,000.

The alliance brings together nine European universities of technology that cooperate in education, research, innovation and academic mobility. In addition to Wrocław Tech, its members are Aalto University, TU Darmstadt, Graz University of Technology, Grenoble INP – Université Grenoble Alpes, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Politecnico di Torino, the University of Lisbon and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.

About the ranking

The Academic Ranking of World Universities has been published since 2003. Since 2009, it has been compiled by the independent organisation ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.

Universities are assessed using six objective indicators covering the quality of education and academic staff, as well as research performance. These include publications, highly cited researchers and Nobel Prize laureates associated with the institution.

Harvard University topped the ranking, followed by Stanford University in second place and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in third.
