SBBE Master’s programme extended with €300k funding boost

Education in the unique Sustainable Biomass and Bioproducts Engineering (SBBE) programme will continue for the next two years. Wrocław University of Science and Technology has secured over PLN 1.3 million in funding from the NAWA Katamaran programme to support its delivery.

The SBBE programme is an international Master’s degree designed for candidates interested in gaining both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in technologies that use biomass as a key resource of the future.

The programme is delivered jointly by three universities: Wrocław University of Science and Technology (leader), the ), University of Castilla-La Mancha w Hiszpanii oraz Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology w Finlandii. in Spain, and LUT University (Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology) in Finland. Students spend one semester at each institution and then choose where to complete their Master’s thesis. Graduates receive diplomas from all three universities (a so-called multidiploma), significantly enhancing their competitiveness on the international job market.

International career path and prestigious diplomas

“We educate both industry specialists and future researchers. Last year, 4 out of 19 graduates went on to pursue doctoral studies within the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Networks programme,” says Prof. Izabela Pawlaczyk-Graja from the Faculty of Chemistry, programme coordinator.

The knowledge provided within the programme addresses contemporary global challenges and the rapidly growing demand for experts in green technologies and the circular economy, including professionals capable of designing and implementing biomass-based solutions.

“The level of interest in the programme speaks for itself. In the most recent recruitment round, more than 960 candidates from 77 countries applied for just 20 places. Continuing the programme responds to real market needs and strong student demand. For the University, it is a strategic investment in the future of both students and the modern technology sector,” Prof. Pawlaczyk-Graja adds.

Until now, the SBBE programme had been delivered under the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master (EMJM), supported by the European Commission. The new edition, thanks to the involvement of Prof. Pawlaczyk-Graja, has secured funding of over PLN 1.3 million from the NAWA Katamaran programme.

The funding will enable two additional recruitment rounds in the academic years 2026/2027 and 2027/2028. This is the first initiative of its kind at Wrocław University of Science and Technology.

Practical learning and student support

“The project aims not only to continue the programme in an international format, but above all to further improve the quality of education at all three partner universities,” explains Prof. Pawlaczyk-Graja. “Students will benefit from access to modern laboratories, up-to-date curricula aligned with the latest trends, and an even greater share of practical classes, including real cooperation with industry and research projects.”

In addition, students will receive monthly financial support to facilitate mobility between partner universities.

Admission rules

Recruitment is international and conducted in English. The programme is open to graduates of Bachelor’s programmes in technical fields, particularly chemical engineering, chemical technology, and related disciplines.

It is an excellent opportunity for candidates who want to gain specialised expertise while studying in an international environment across three European technical universities.
