Artur Chmielewski - zdjęcieArtur B. Chmielewski, an employee of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory research centre in Pasadena, California, studied physics, mechanics, and computer science at the University of Michigan and the University of Southern California.

At the agency, he has probably done every job imaginable: he’s built scientific instruments for Mars rovers and nuclear generators for interplanetary missions, tested spacecraft parts, and worked on 15 NASA missions exploring the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and asteroids.

He has also headed 4 missions, including landing on a comet, with budgets exceeding hundreds of millions of dollars. He has designed a technology laboratory to build telescopes for the observation of black holes and taking photos of planets orbiting other stars.

In addition to engineering and science, he has consulted on Hollywood films and worked with American Indians to introduce scientific vocabulary into the Navajo language. He also loves working with young people, helping start-ups, as well as organising science clubs for high schools and research projects for universities.

It is currently involved in another Mars helicopter project and the OASIS mission, which will search for water under the Sahara desert. OASIS is his favourite mission as it offers the opportunity to use space technology to improve life on Earth.

Artur Chmielewski has received 5 medals from NASA and 7 awards from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, as well as many awards for promoting Polish science. He has co-authored 3 books on technology and authored hundreds of publications and papers at the world's best universities.  Recently, together with Ewelina Zambrzycka, he published a book for young people entitled “Cosmic Challenges”.
