Wrocław University of Science and Technology is the top Polish university in the Times Higher Education Interdisciplinary Science Rankings (THE ISR) 2026. This prestigious listing evaluates universities’ contribution to and engagement in interdisciplinary research.
In this year’s edition, the university advanced to 190th place globally among the world’s most interdisciplinary institutions. At the same time, it ranks first among the thirteen Polish universities included in the ranking.
“This result reflects our development strategy, in which we prioritised interdisciplinary research and education aligned with the needs of society and the economy. It represents our vision of what a modern European technical university should be,” says Prof. Arkadiusz Wójs, Rector of Wrocław University of Science and Technology. “Today, research at our university is already conducted in fourteen scientific disciplines, including – as the first technical university in Poland – in medical sciences. And there is more to come, as we will soon expand our offer to include economics and finance,” he adds.
THE ISR is the world’s first ranking to measure universities’ contribution to the development of interdisciplinary research. It is prepared by Times Higher Education (THE) in cooperation with Schmidt Science Fellows, a prestigious fellowship programme that supports early-career scientists working in interdisciplinary fields.
The ranking evaluates three key areas corresponding to stages in the lifecycle of research projects:
• Inputs (19% of the score): resources allocated to interdisciplinary research
• Process (16%): organisational solutions supporting interdisciplinary collaboration
• Outputs (65%): scientific results, publication quality and impact
For the second consecutive year, the top position went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Stanford University ranked second, followed by the California Institute of Technology and Duke University in joint third place.
This year’s international and national rankings confirm the growing standing of Wrocław University of Science and Technology both in Poland and globally.
According to the two leading global university rankings — the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU 2025) and the Shanghai Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS 2025) — Wrocław University of Science and Technology is now one of the top five Polish universities and one of the country’s leading technical institutions.
In ARWU 2025, the university ranks 901–1000 worldwide and 4–7 nationally. It is also the second-best technical university in Poland (after AGH, tied with Warsaw University of Technology) and the only university from the Lower Silesia region included in the ranking.
In GRAS 2025, the university is listed among the world’s best institutions in five engineering subjects. In three of them — civil engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, and materials science and engineering — it holds first place in Poland.
