WUST’s new facility development projects

Date: 15.06.2019 Category: general news

The construction of the InnoCamp-GEO2 research centre and the comprehensive renovation of the former hospital at Hoene-Wrońskiego Street are the two most important projects planned by Wrocław University of Science and Technology in the coming years. Tenders for both development projects will be announced in June.

For the purposes of the investment, all the buildings will be demolished and replaced by a complex of six interconnected facilities. The development, expected to be completed by 2022,

will include the following new laboratories: the Nanophotonics Technology Centre, the Centre for New Technologies and Industrial Virtualisation - Wrocław Digital Factory, the Laboratory of Cryogenics, and the Laboratory of Power Engineering Machines.

The Nanophotonics Technology Centre will carry out projects in the area of nanotechnology, nano-engineering, and nano-photonics; it will also be used to manufacture infra-red devices such as lasers, light emitting diodes, photodiodes, and photodetectors.

Thanks to the establishment of the Centre for New Technologies and Industrial Virtualisation, a world-class digital cluster of research, prototyping, and technology infrastructure will be launched to serve the purposes of scientific and research projects catering to the needs of the national and European economy.

The Laboratory of Cryogenics will mainly deal with the development of new technologies for generating low temperatures, e.g. through the optimisation of thermodynamic cycles, as well as designing individual cryogenic devices and systems.

At the Laboratory of Power Engineering Machines, there will be stands intended for conducting various energy, dynamics, and durability tests of fittings. The facility will carry out works in the field of designing and testing of propeller mixers, flow water turbines, and a series of single-channel pump types.

The interiors of the building will be fully modernised and the main entrances will be rebuilt. The development is planned to be completed in 2020.

The building of the former hospital at Hoene-Wrońskiego Street, which has been a part of Wrocław University of Science and Technology since 2015, will undergo a major renovation.

The complex, comprising two connected buildings, was built at the beginning of the 20th century according to Max Berg’s design. The buildings require complete renovation, which is why the works will include, among other things, façade renovation, roof replacement, partial thermal modernisation, and replacement of windows and doors. The whole scope of construction works was agreed with the Municipal Conservator of Monuments.

After the renovation, the building will house the Faculty of Mathematics. Facilities including 16 teaching rooms, 23 offices, and more than 50 rooms for the teaching staff will be at the scientists’ disposal. In addition, the Student Department will be moved to a part of the building, where there will also be multifunctional rooms and offices for student organisations and scientific circles.

The renovated building is to be handed over in 2021.
