Over 32 thousand students have today started a new academic year at Wrocław University of Science and Technology. – It is a festivity of the whole academic community and a special day for students entering the abode of our university - said Professor Cezary Madryas, Rector of Wrocław University of Science and Technology
In his speech, Rector Madryas addressed issues including new investments to be undertaken by the tertiary institute in the coming years.
One of the most important changes introduced in the previous academic year by the university authorities was the enactment of a new system for financing student activity, which involves, among other things, the category of so-called “strategic scientific circles of Wrocław University of Science and Technology”. The students’ societies receive increased financial support in recognition of their activity undertaken so far.
Among the examples of scientific circles which attained considerable success thanks to the new system, Professor Madryas mentioned PWr Racing Team, KN PiRM, KN Wireless Group, and Off-Road - a scientific circle for unconventional vehicles. Moreover, Rector read out the names of BSc, MSc, and doctoral students who last year received grants, scholarships, and awards for their research.
– Studying at WUST requires effort, but it also brings considerable satisfaction while helping one to obtain the knowledge which is indispensable in their further professional life. I hope that the examples I gave you will inspire students, including PhD candidates, and give them motivation for their further work. It’s worth joining those who feel like making an extra effort. Take advantage of the possibilities that your university gives you - he urged.
Rector’s speech was followed by the ceremonial matriculation of students. In the new academic year, 7,747 MSc and 160 doctoral students start pursuing their education at Wrocław University of Science and Technology.
The inauguration lecture entitled “A Chemist in the Domain of Nanometres and Gigawatts” was delivered by Professor Marek Samoć from the university’s Faculty of Chemistry, the winner of the so-called Polish Nobel Prize of 2016, i.e. the most important Polish scientific award granted by the Foundation for Polish Science.
Sixteen people were awarded Medals of the Commission of National Education for outstanding services to schooling and education. Additionally, Rector’s special prizes Docendo Discimus were awarded in recognition of particular achievements in educating.
Also, the university’s Students’ Self-government inaugurated the new academic year. The occasion was marked by an outdoor event, held at the Students’ Passage, named “I Love WUST” under the banner “The Great Beginning Theory!”. The programme included a food truck festival, raffle with prizes, obstacle course, field game, and an open-air dance.
