The WUST team "Engineers" has won the silver medal in the fifth season of the T-Mobile Academic League of the League of Legends. In an extremely exciting final, which held at the Student Culture Zone, our students lost to the "Lions" from Gdańsk University of Technology.
The Academic League is a sports competition where sixteen teams compete for eight weeks, fighting each other in the popular game League of Legends. Two five strong teams fight for the victory, and their task is to reach the base of the opponent and destroy the so-called "nexus", the main building in the game. Matches are played up to two wins on the map.
During the season, the games were divided into two phases -the group stage and play-offs. This time, the "Engineers" went to group D, where they competed with teams from the Military University of Technology, University of Białystok and Warsaw University of Medicine. Our team qualified from the first place to the play-off phase by winning two games and noting one tie.
In the quarter-final, they defeated the "Sorcerers" from the Silesian University of Technology 2:0, and in the semi-final the beat the "Walruses" from the University of Gdańsk with the same result. In this way, they advanced to the grand final, in which they faced the "Lions".
Watched live by several hundred fans, the final turned out to be an excellent spectacle. Eventually, the team from Gdańsk University of Technology won 2:1, regaining the championship title it had lost two years before.
For winning the championship title, students from Gdańsk received the cup, medals, and a cheque for 5,000 PLN. The "Engineers" raked in a cheque for 4,000 PLN, while the "Pack" won a cheque for 3,000 PLN and for taking third place. The awards were presented by Marcin Rausch, and Jacek Lamperski PhD, Vice-Rector for Student Affairs at WUST.
Apart from competing in the League of Legends, Saturday also saw the final of the first season of CodingMasters, i.e. the Polish championship for graduates and students in programming courses - the youngest competition held within the league, where eight players fought for the victory. In the student category, the winner was Grzegorz Szumigaj from the University of Warsaw, while Michał Zieliński from the Jagiellonian University was second to none in the graduate category.
