The “Engineers” team of Wrocław University of Science and Technology has won in the third season of the T-Mobile Academic League games. As a reward, the masters received a commemorative cup, prizes in kind, and a cheque for 4 thousand PLN
The T-Mobile Academic League consists in an e-sports challenge in which sixteen teams compete with each other for eight weeks playing the popular network game League of Legends, among other ones. Two teams of five fight for victory and their task is to reach the opponent's base and destroy the so-called "Nexus", the main building in the game. Matches are played up to two wins on the map.
The third league season has now ended. The first edition of the tournament was won by "Engineers" from Wrocław University of Science and Technology, and the second one, whose final was held at WUST, was topped by "Lions" from Gdańsk University of Technology. After the final of the third season, the championship title returned to Wrocław.
The winning team of "Engineers" comprised Adam Howaniec (captain), Bartosz Stopyra, Tomasz Duda, Paweł Stępień, Robert Binek, and two reserve players - Krzysztof Śliwa and Dawid Gofryk.
- The development of sports competitions has been very rapid recently, and competition in this field is becoming more and more popular. That is why we agreed to our team’s taking part in the tournaments and this is why we’re trying to invest in it - says Jacek Lamperski PhD, Eng, Pro-Rector for Student Affairs at WUST. We want this development at Wrocław University of Science and Technology to continue and we want you to have a place to train in the future. It would be good if you were already thinking about training your successors. I’m very happy with this victory and wish you further successes - adds the Vice-Rector.
Currently, the T-Mobile Academic League players compete in four games - League of Legends, Overwatch, Starcraft II, and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six. It’s worth stressing that WUST is represented in all of the challenges. The next season of the tournament starts on March, 25, and the final, which this time should take be held at Wrocław University of Science and Technology, is planned for late May.
The success of "Engineers" has already been noticed by professional e-sport organisations. Our students have signed a contract with Esports Academy, a gaming school for young electronic sports players, and their matches can already be seen in the Ultraleague.
On the initiative of our students, Wrocław University of Science and Technology also established the Academic Sports Association, which brings together supporters of electronic competition. - The last enrolments showed that there’s a lot of interest in this subject at our university, with several dozen candidates applying to us for an interview. In the next semester, we’d like to organise the first team tournament at the university - adds Adam Howaniec.
