The first stage of enrolments to WUST’s Doctoral School has come to an end with over 300 candidates registered, including 104 foreigners. Now they will be interviewed, and the ranking lists will be announced in the first half of July.
Currently, there are 152 PhD students at the Doctoral School, including fourteen foreigners and 24 PhD students studying under the "Implementation Doctorate" programme. The studies cover twelve scientific disciplines.
Conducted remotely, enrolments for the Doctoral School started on 19 May and lasted almost a month. Finally, 314 candidates registered in the system, including as many as 104 foreigners, applying for 143 places prepared for them.
– During last year's enrolments, we had just over 200 candidates. This time, we’d expected more interest, but the number of foreign candidates exceeded our expectations - says University Professor Agnieszka Wylomańska, PhD, DSc, Eng. Vice-Dean for Doctoral Students.
The scientific disciplines "Automatics, Electronics, and Electrotechnology", "Technical Informatics and Telecommunications", "Environmental Engineering, Mining and Power Engineering", and "Chemical Sciences" enjoyed the candidates’ greatest interest. However, it will be most difficult to obtain a place in the discipline "Management and Quality Sciences", with nearly five people applying for one place.
Among foreigners, the most numerous groups are candidates from India (22 people), Pakistan (14 people), and Iraq (13 people), and the disciplines most popular among them were "Management and Quality Sciences" and "Technical Informatics and Telecommunications".
– A separate pool of candidates are PhD students pursuing studies under the "Implementation Doctorate" programme, where 58 applications were submitted - adds Professor Agnieszka Wyłomańska.
The implementation doctoral programmes are conducted under a dual system. What makes them different from traditional ones is the fact that they are carried out in two places - at the university and a company. Also, the doctoral projects are written under the supervision of not one, but two people: an academic teacher and a specialist designated by the employer.
Now the candidates are waiting for their interviews, which will start on June 24. The ranking lists are to be ready by July 7, and starting July 13, the Dean's Office at the Doctoral School will provide the candidates with information - only by phone - about their results. The results will be approved by September 30 at the latest.
