In August, our students are to organise an international electric cross motorbike competition. It’s going to be the first event of this kind to be held in Poland. However, before it takes place, the students will participate in SmartMoto Challenge, organised in Barcelona, with a vehicle named LEM Thunder
SmartMoto Challenge is a competition for teams comprising students of second and third cycle programmes. Their task is to design and build from scratch an electric motorbike which will then take part in the challenge. - It’s about using the knowledge acquired at the university to develop a real industrial project - explain students from the scientific circle PiRM. The competition involves the evaluation of the motorbike and its dynamic performance, but also the team’s business skills.
- The teams compete against each other by tackling static and dynamic challenges - explains Michał Ostrowski. - They must talk about budgeting and the project’s general business plan, as well as demonstrate their ability in tests such as acceleration, ride between cones, and endurance test - he adds. Each competition of this kind is themed. This year’s event focuses on constructing a cross/enduro type motorbike which will have to do well not only on a specially prepared off-road track but also in challenges involving riding on a tarmac surface.
- In the regulations, we determined basic technical guidelines such as the engine’s power, which we increased to 30 kilowatts. All ready parts used for the construction project must have certificates of approval. However, we left a lot of liberty and space for the constructors’ innovative ideas - says a student and adds that SmartMoto Challenge will be accompanied by the E-mobility festival.
The organisers plan to invite companies operating in this field to present state-of-the-art achievements in the rapidly growing electromobility sector. The competition will be held on August 22-16. The static part and some dynamic ones will take place in the area of WUST’s campus, while the cross challenge will be organised on an off-road track. Teams can register their entries by the end of February. For more details, please visit the website Wrocław SmartMoto Challenge.
The organisation of the competition in Wrocław isn’t the only task to be faced by the members of the Scientific Circle of Mobile Vehicles and Robots. At the same time, intensive preparations are now underway for July’s Barcelona challenge, in which they intend to take part.
In the previous editions, they constructed machines such as an urban motorbike (MOS), a pizza delivery vehicle (LEM Napoli), police motorbike (LEM Bullet), and last year - a cross motorbike (LEM Falcon). It was the last of the vehicles that gave them complete victory in Spain. They ranked first in the general classification, also winning the static and dynamic challenges.
This year's design is also a cross motorbike (according to the organisers’ requirements). Supported by UNIKAT Motorworks, the students are building a new motorbike under the name LEM Thunder and promise to soon reveal details of the new construction.
