Nearly 200 scientists specialising in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and science will come to Wrocław Tech to participate in the Building Bridges conference (26-28 November, building H-14).
Emmanuelle Charpentier, winner of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and Balzan Prize winners astrophysicist Prof Heino Falcke and evolutionary geneticist Prof Eske Willerslev.
- Building Bridges is an annual event that brings together prominent thinkers and world-renowned scientists to share groundbreaking ideas and discoveries. We are delighted to host them in Wrocław. The conference programme has been built around issues that are at the centre of public debate today, such as artificial intelligence, energy transition and sustainable development,’ says Professor Arkadiusz Wójs, Rector of Wrocław University of Science ande Technology and Director of Academia Europaea Wrocław Hub, which is organising the symposium.
The highlight of the conference will be a lecture by Professor Emmanuelle Charpentier, a French microbiologist, biochemist and geneticist who, together with Jennifer A. Doudna, was awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of one of the most precise gene editing tools. CRISPR-Cas9 has revolutionised science, paving the way for innovative anti-cancer therapies and bringing us closer to being able to treat inherited diseases.
The plenary session will feature Prof Monika Bello, curator and head of art at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research CERN, who will discuss the relationship between art and science. Other guests at the symposium will be Prof. Heino Falcke, an eminent theoretical astrophysicist and radio astronomer, co-author of groundbreaking research into black holes and cosmic particles, and Prof. Eske Willerslev, an expert in the genetics of ancient populations, who will speak in Wroclaw about the early settlement of the Americas.
The three-day conference includes a total of 21 plenary sessions and two panel discussions for Academia Europaea member researchers.
Open to the public, the lecture ‘Sustainability: what do we need to do next?’ will be given by Professor Steve Evans, Director of Sustainability Research at the University of Cambridge. The meeting will take place on Tuesday 26 November in our auditorium (building A-1), pre-registration is required.
