Winning in the acceleration test, the third place in the business presentation category, and finally the third place in the general ranking - these are PWR Racing Team’s excellent results in the Formula Student competition, which finished in Italy on Sunday, July 15th
47 teams competed on the Riccardo Paletti track located in the Italian city Varano with WUST students defending their title. Last year, they topped the general ranking with their bolide RT08, outstripping the runners-up from Milan’s University of Technology by over 40 points.
In late May, the young engineers presented their new construction - the RT09 racing car, which is a follow-up to their previous, very successful model. Lighter, more ergonomic, and featuring original solutions and a more powerful engine, the new vehicle meant that there was hope for the team to climb the podium. It turned out that it was not vain.
The Italian challenge started on July 11 with the first teams turning up at the racing track early morning. - We took very little time to set up our stand at the track and prepare the bolide for technical inspection. As the winners of last year’s edition of the competition, we were entitled to take part in it earlier than the other teams. Everything went smoothly and we managed to go through all consecutive stages without problems - said Anna Mycek, the leader of PWR Racing Team’s marketing and management department.
As usual, the event started with the static competitions, i.e. the business presentation and the Design Event, which is a presentation of the bolide’s construction. PWR Racing Team’s business presentation was rated very highly with our team taking the third place, falling by only 1.5 points behind the winning team of the Technical University of Graz. As for the Design Event, our students were ranked seventh.
Saturday and Saturday were the days of the racing track challenge. The bolides were evaluated in the following dynamic categories - Acceleration (test of acceleration at a distance of 75 metres), Skidpad (race against the clock along an 8-shaped track), Autocross (one circuit of the track against the clock), Endurance (main race), and Efficiency (assessment of the vehicles’ performance).
Achieving the time of 3.69 seconds, our RT09 turned out to be the best in the acceleration test. With 54.46 seconds, the bolide took the sixth place in the fastest lap category and was fourth in the Endurance and Efficiency category. Unfortunately, our students didn’t do so well in the Skidpad category, reaching the seventeenth place.
Ultimately, PWR Racing Team scored 805.169 points and reached the third place in the general ranking of vehicles with a combustion engine. The second place went to the German team from Erlangen-Nuremberg University (819.414 points), while the constructors from the Austrian Technical University of Graz climbed the top step of the podium with 908.070 points.
