On Monday, Professor Jerzy Jasieńko, Vice-Rector for Organisation and Development of Wrocław University of Science and Technology, received his Wrocław Scientific Award for interdisciplinary research integrating the academic milieu. The ceremony at Oratorium Marianum was part of the Community Inauguration of the academic year 2018/2019
The distinction was established in 2016 by the President of Wrocław Rafał Dutkiewicz “in recognition of scientific research as serving as a substantial model of the joint work of the academic and artistic milieus for the benefit of the common good being the development of the city”.
The first winners of Wrocław Scientific Award were researchers from Wrocław University of Science and Technology - Professor Edward Chlebus from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Professor Marek Samoć from the Faculty of Chemistry. In the previous year, it was conferred to Professor Andrzej Pękalski from the University of Wrocław.
Professor Jasieńko is a globally recognised authority on the protection of historic buildings who, in his day-to-day practice, cooperates with numerous domestic and foreign scientific centres. He enjoys immense recognition in the scientific community - said Professor Adam Jezierski, the Rector of the University of Wrocław in his laudatory speech, adding that the laureate’s activity has been also recognised with a number of awards and medals, including the Silver Medal of Merit to Culture “Gloria Artis” and the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
– It’s a great honour. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all the people whom I have met on my professional path, recognised authorities and young researchers alike. I have had an opportunity to learn a lot from both groups - said Professor Jasieńko.
In the ceremonial event, the laureate delivered a short lecture entitled “Historical Buildings - Threats and Transformations”, in which he presented the origins of legal protection of historic buildings, as the issue hadn’t come into being in Europe until the second half of the 19th century.
