bulwar_odsl_tablicy_03.jpgThe resolution concerning the conferring of the name of Rector Stanisław Kulczyński on the boulevard of WUST was made in April 2018 by the Senate of Wrocław University of Science and Technology. – Today’s celebration is the culmination of all activities taken in the defence of Professor Kulczyński’s good name – said the Rector of WUST, Professor Cezary Madryas, reminiscing the vents of last year when as a result of the decommunisation law, the professor’s name was removed from street plaques.

He also emphasised that the decision to change the name to Rector Stanisław Kulczyński Boulevard was unanimously adopted by the Senate by acclamation.

Professor Andrzej Wiszniewski was a great advocate of the idea of honouring Professor Stanisław Kulczyński in this way. – I’m genuinely proud and happy that one of the most beautiful boulevards in Wrocław will now have this patron - an eminent professor who rendered such great service to our city’s whole academic milieu. The political authorities tried to push him in the darkness of historical oblivion. We do remember none the less! – said Professor Wiszniewski. – Already as the Rector of the Technical University of Lviv, he defended it against the nationalist hooliganism.

The guest of honour at the event was Professor Kulczyński’s grandson Grzegorz Fałda. In his speech, he stressed how important and unexpected the ceremony held last Wednesday was to him and his whole family.

– My grandfather was particularly close to me. I remembered him as a person for whom science was the most important thing, and it was science that he wholly devoted himself to - said Grzegorz Fałda.  He also recollected the event of 1938 when Professor Kulczyński, as the Rector of Lviv, refused to sign the anti-Semitic document of the introduction of the “school bench ghetto” and resigned his function.  – He did it for an idea. He was very worried that the university’s political independence was being attacked - he added thanking Wrocław’s academic milieu for its successful attempts in defence of his grandfather’s honour.

The author of the plaque commemorating Professor Stanisław Kulczyński, placed on building H-14 along the boulevard, is Professor Janusz Kucharski of the Academy of Fine Arts.
