PhD student from WUST wins a research placement at the University of Angers in France

Tomasz Skalski has received a research scholarship from the Government of the French Republic, under which he will write his doctoral thesis at two universities: Wrocław University of Science and Technology and Angers University in France.

The decision was contributed to by Tomasz Skalski's achievements to date and the up-to-date topic of his doctoral project, which will concern the application of deep combinatorial methods in contemporary statistics and Data Science.

The supervisors of his doctoral procedure are University Professor Maciej Wilczyński, PhD, Dsc. and Professor Piotr Graczyk from Université d'Angers in France.

The winner is relishing the fact that he will be able to do research under the supervision of two outstanding statisticians from Poland and France. He expects to develop a new research method and work on highest reliability estimators, i.e. a way of wise prediction.

- My doctoral project will be a continuation of the research carried out when I was writing of my Master's thesis, supervised by Professor Krzysztof Bogdan. First, my work will focus on improving the method of statistical research. As far as this matter is concerned, there are many interesting things to study and understand. I’d like to check how much data is needed for estimators to have the greatest reliability. In the second part of the work, I want to improve certain methods of statistical inference in discrete graphic models, where there are many random variables, and check what is the relationship between these characteristics. These dependencies can then be effectively modelled using the graph theory - explains Tomasz Skalski.

Tomasz Skalski received his Master's degree in 2018. He wrote his thesis, entitled “Highest Reliability Estimators in Discreet Models” at WUST’s Faculty of Mathematics, specialisation: Theoretical Mathematics. In the period from 2017 to 2018, he was a holder of scholarships at Facultat de Matematiques i Estadística, Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya and under Erasmus+. He also won the title of the Best Graduate of WUST’s Faculty of Mathematics (2nd place in the general classification).  Moreover, he is a many-time winner of the International Mathematical and Logical Games Championship.
