The 2nd Summer School of Architecture has begun at Wrocław University of Science and Technology. Students design and build prototypes of furniture for work and leisure, using paper and wood as their primary materials
With 25 students of our University enrolled, the classes will be held until July 25. The curriculum coordinators of the SSA are Marcel Bilow PhD. Eng. Arch. from the University of Technology in Delft and Jerzy Łątka, a doctoral student from the Faculty of Architecture of WUST. Both instructors have extensive experience of prototyping and implementation of innovative solutions in the area of architectural structures. The leading theme of this summer’s edition of the course is “Work&Chill” (last year, it was so-called living units).
- Work&Chill means places where you can perch, lie down, relax, and talk with friends, but also work in groups or individually, read, have something to eat, or do other activities typical of schools, universities, or offices – explains Jerzy Łątka.
The attendees first take part in workshops (until July 17), during which they come up with their own ideas related to the subject. Then they present them and - based on the proposals put forward - become divided into groups in which they develop concept and detailed designs, lists of materials and execution plans. According to the instructors’ assumptions, the students’ designs should meet criteria such as innovativeness, mobility, modularity, comfort, and low price.
At the next stage, which will last until June 26, they must execute their projects on their own. The participants will work at the Dąbie Depot hall in Wróblewskiego street, using specialist tools. Their safety will be ensured by the instructors. Finally, each group will deliver a 1:1 prototype. The organisers stress that this form of the course makes it possible to guide the students along the entire project path, all the way from the idea to its translation into reality.
