Markers to make it easier to move around the campus

Date: 11.07.2019 Category: general news

Wrocław University of Science and Technology has launched a pilot system of electronic markers located at the campus to make it easier for people with disabilities to move around the area. The devices have been installed in thirty places, including the main building, Bibliotech, and Polinka stations.

elektroniczny_znacznik_na_stacji_polinki.jpgSensors can now be found in thirty locations across the campus. These small devices, installed both inside the buildings and on the façades, have an autonomous energy source, which allows them to work for the impressive period of three years. If you want to use them, just download the free Totupoint application to your smartphone or tablet and have it running while moving around the campus.

- When you approach a marker, you will hear information from the loudspeaker installed in it about your current location, e.g. the entrance to the canteen in the Student Culture Zone or the "Polinka" station. In addition, the mobile application displays extensive text descriptions with information about getting around inside a building, and also accessibility in terms of information and architecture - explains Marek Tankielun (manager of the Workroom for the Blind and Visually Impaired of Wrocław University of Science and Technology), who is himself a blind person.

If necessary, it is also possible to call for assistance, as the application features phone numbers e.g. of the Career Office, canteen service, or the Disabled Persons Support Section. When the user passes the canteen, the application shows them the up-to-date menu. Importantly, a website is connected to the system, where you can check beforehand where the tags are located and what information they provide.

- The application itself is available in Polish and English. It’s also very easy to use. You can, of course, configure it according to your needs, but the standard settings are chosen in a way letting you use it right from the start with no hassle - adds the manager.

Currently, the devices can be found in buildings A-1, C-13, C-18, D-21, H-14, as well as at both stations of the Polinka cableway.

The full list of markers installed at the WUST campus has been published on the website. Comments on the operation of the markers can be sent to pomoc.n@pwr.edu.pl.

The purchase of the devices was financed with funds of Wrocław University of Science and Technology. For more information about the Totupoint system, please visit the website.
