WUST students’ great performance. Their Light Electric Motorcycle LEM Thunder v2 took part in an international competition in Barcelona and did very well. It took second place in its category, winning the toughest part of the challenge - the demanding endurance race.
The students from the Scientific Circle of Vehicles and Mobile Robots have been taking part in the prestigious international SmartMoto Challenge competition held in Barcelona since 2013, missing no year. So far, they have achieved victories in 2014 and 2017 and four times third place (in 2013, 2015, 2016, and 2018).
This year's edition, just like last year, is a competition of motorcycles adapted to off-road conditions. Teams from Poland, Spain, and Russia lined up at the start. The university was represented by LEM Thunder v2, which competed in the category of machines with up to 30 kW engines. In Barcelona, it entered the competition with a unique number: “71", which refers to Wrocław’s phone code.
The Spanish competition started on July 16th with technical tests. A day later, a technical presentation was held, and on Thursday, the dynamic challenges began, including time trial at the enduro track, the fight for the title of the best-accelerating motorcycle, and endurance race.
During this last competition, the contenders had to do 20 laps in the shortest possible time on the demanding Castelloli track. Here, LEM Thunder turned out to be second to none. - It was an extremely difficult test of the mechanical strength of our structure, as well as the performance capacity of the electric drive: the batteries, controls, and engines - says Marta Zarzeczna from the Scientific Circle of Vehicles and Mobile Robots. - All in all, we passed it with an excellent grade, because we managed to simply outclass our opponents.
Eventually, LEM Thunder returns to Wrocław with four awards. First of all, in the general classification of the entire competition, our students won a silver medal, only having been outperformed by the team from the Russian RUDN University. They also took second places in both dynamic and static competition classifications. In addition, the jury recognised the university’s motorcycle with the best design.
- We’re very happy and motivated to continue working - says Marta Zarzeczna to sum up this year’s performance of the team. - A whole year of work, design, construction, and sleepless nights in the garage have brought the results we dreamt of.
