– Polish and Italian mathematical societies boast many years’ cooperation, resulting in joint research projects and scientific conferences, among other things. It should be pointed out, however, that we don’t limit ourselves to these activities, as we also maintain a common policy with respect to mathematics in the international arena - said Professor Veronica Gavagna from the University of Florence, a member of UMI authorities, at the ceremonial opening of the event.

The conference involved both plenary lectures and over 40 specialised themed sessions focusing on diverse areas of mathematics. One of the plenary lectures, concerning the history of mathematics, is a tribute to the humanities.

– It’s the biggest mathematical conference of those that have taken place in Wrocław. Its purpose is to develop mathematics, and its programme involves a presentation of the latest trends and achievements in this field - says Professor Krzysztof Bogdan from the Faculty of Mathematics of Wrocław University of Science and Technology.

The opening ceremony included the handing of awards granted by the Polish Mathematical Society:

The Hugon Steinhaus Award was received by Professor Rafał Weron from WUST’s Faculty of Computer Science and Management. Our scientist was honoured for his lifetime achievement with an emphasis on modelling and forecasting prices on the wholesale energy market. The Stefan Banach Award was handed to Professor Krzysztof Bogdan from the Faculty of Mathematics in recognition of his groundbreaking results in the theory of the potential of potential theory of jump processes and non-local operators.
