International start of the new semester

Over 200 students from all over the world have started their adventure with Wrocław University of Science and Technology. During the orientation days, organised for the first time online by the Department of International Cooperation, they were becoming familiar with WUST and the rules of their study in the summer semester.

Orientation days at WUSTUnder student exchange programmes (Erasmus+ and Student Exchange), 115 students are starting their courses in the summer semester. The largest groups are from France, Turkey, Portugal, and Spain. 114 students will begin their full-time degree programmes. most of whom come from Belarus, Ukraine, and Nigeria. Our students also include people from Croatia, Iraq, Russia, South Korea, Colombia, Rwanda, El Salvador, or Mongolia, among other countries.

 – I am very happy that you chose to study at our university. As you may know, your studies in the summer semester will be conducted remotely. This decision is the result of our concern for your safety – said Prof. Dariusz Łydżba, WUST’s Vice-Rector for Cooperation. – I know it is not quite what you were hoping for. We, too, would like it to be different so that you can come to our campus and enjoy all it has to offer. However, I can assure you that even if you study at WUST remotely, you have a guarantee that the standard of education will be the highest possible – added Prof. Łydżba.

Our international students will be looked after by the Department of International Cooperation.

– Students can contact us with queries concerning both their studies and residence issues – says Anna Rogalska, Head of the DIC. – Despite the restrictions enforced by COVID-19, we want to give students the chance to meet with us directly by making an appointment through the ICT system.

Since last semester, there has been a special contact address at WUST – studentsupport@pwr.edu.pl – which enables better communication with foreign students.

– We realise that, in the era of the pandemic, those who start studying in Poland may feel even more lost. Apart from dealing with issues such as cultural differences or separation from their loved ones, they are also reliant on purely virtual communication with their lecturers and group mates – explains Anna Rogalska. – This can result in a sense of not belonging to the academic community. We aim to minimise this feeling.  We want our support activity to help students, whether they are beginning their studies in Polish or English, feel that they are part of our university – she adds.

During the orientation days, our new students watched a promotional film about the university and listened to a talk about what life is like in Wrocław and Poland. Also, scientific circles and student organisations prepared their presentations. There was also guidance on the coronavirus pandemic situation and psychological support that can be obtained at WUST.

Luca Martinelli from BrazilLucca Martinelli has come to WUST from Brazil, where he studied Mechanical Engineering. He was also a member of an aviation science group. However, he decided to devote one semester of his studies to a student exchange programme.

– I chose your country due to economic factors, but as soon as I arrived here, I immediately decided that I wanted to stay longer – says Lucca Martinelli. – So, I became enrolled to study at WUST, where I managed to obtain my engineering degree. I also joined the PWR Racing Team and started an internship at Whirlpool.

In the new academic year, he starts studying for a Master's degree at the Faculty of Mechanical and Power Engineering, pursuing the Power Engineering degree programme in English.

Currently, over 1,317 foreigners are studying at our university, which offers almost 40 programmes in English.
