Where is humanity headed? What does computer science have in common with global warming? You’re welcome to attend a lecture by the eminent Austrian scientist Professor Hermann Maurer. The way he approaches a number of issues may come as a big surprise to some of you

maurer.jpgProfessor Maurer will be the guest of a new meeting to be held under the Interdisciplinary Scientific Seminar at Wrocław University of Science and Technology. The scientist will deliver a lecture entitled “We need lots of imagination to solve some of the big problems facing mankind” (June 12, 02:00 pm, building D-20).

Professor Maurer works at the Graz University of Technology. He was born in 1941 in Vienna and studied mathematics at the city’s university. In 1965, he obtained the title of doctor of mathematical sciences. Also, he completed studies at the University of Calgary. Professor Maurer has worked as an academic teacher at universities in Germany, New Zealand, Australia, the USA, Brazil, and Canada.

He has devised many innovative solutions in the field of informatics, data collecting and processing, as well as the development of Internet networks and written 20 books and a few hundred articles, and received numerous prestigious awards. Professor Maurer belongs to a number of organisations and associations, including Academia Europaea. He holds the title of doctor honoris causa conferred by the Technical University of St. Petersburg and the universities of Karlsruhe and Calgary.

In his research work, he has dealt with subjects including computer-supported new media applications and techniques of combating plagiarism. Currently, he is working on network multimedia systems applied in the fields of culture and education, integration of information, and social consequences of the advancement of informatics.

Professor Maurer will be visiting Wrocław University of Science and Technology on Tuesday, June 12.  - His lecture will concern unconditional solutions to fundamental problems that mankind is facing, such as overpopulation, global warming, or digitalisation - explains Professor Arkadiusz Wójs, Chairman of the Interdisciplinary Scientific Seminar. Professor Maurer is an outstanding specialist in the field of informatics whose interests are extremely broad.  He’s an inspiring lecturer known for bold, provocative, and brilliant arguments - enthuses Professor Wójs.

Professor Maurer’s lecture will begin at 02:00 pm (WUST Congress Centre, building D-20, ul. Janiszewskiego St. 8). Delivered in English, it will be simultaneously translated into Polish. The lecture is open to everybody, but those interested in attending it should register on the website Maurer.evenea.pl.
