The first place for the best design, second in the static challenges, and finally the fourth place in the general ranking are the achievements of the students from Wrocław University of Science and Technology who took part in Barcelona SmartMoto Challenge.
The competition for electric car builders, held from July 16 to July 22 in Spain, saw teams from countries including Russia, Spain, and Poland. As always, every team participating in the event had to go through static competitions, such as presentations of their vehicle’s business plan and technical features, and then - dynamic ones, including performance and acceleration tests.
The thirteen-strong team representing the Scientific Circle of Vehicles and Mobile Robots (KN PIRM) went to Barcelona with their Light Electric Motorcycle Thunder, suited to races in difficult conditions, such as the Dakar Rally (this year, it was the very theme of the students’ constructions).
The vehicle weighs 120 kg, featuring a power of 30 kW (around 40 HP). The capacity of the battery fitted in the motorcycle, entirely designed by our students, allows a 90 km ride at the speed of 120 km/h. When designing the construction, our students used technologies including 3D printing.
Despite the fact that our constructors had to handle a few problems and malfunctions During the challenge, they managed to top the best design category and reach the second place in the static competitions. After the summary of results, the Wrocław University of Science and Technology team took the fourth place in the general ranking. The winners of this year’s SmartMoto Challenge were members of the team from Moscow University of Technology.
It was the sixth performance of our students at competitions in Spain. So far, they can boast of wins in 2014 and in 2017 and three-time third place (in 2013, 2015 and 2016).
In just one month (August 22-26) members of KN PIRM will for the first time organize the Polish edition of the electric motorcycle competition under the name Wroclaw SmartMoto Challenge.
