Earthquakes and attempts to deceive the brain - spectacular physical demonstrations

How to talk about science in an interesting way? Guests from the country’s various universities shared their ways to present experiments and physical phenomena as Wrocław University of Science and Technology hosted the 19th Meeting of the National Physics Demonstrators' Club.

pokazy_fizycz_01.jpg- We’re exchanging experiences in the shape of our experiments - says Associate Professor Anna Hajdusianek from the Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology, which is the host of the conference. She adds that such meetings take place every year in different cities. - Thanks to this, we have an opportunity to find new ideas and learn - says Associate Professor Hajdusianek, who for many years has been conducting a series of popular science lectures held at our university under the name the Academy of Young Explorers.

The meeting started on June 24th and lasted three days. The conference program included mainly demonstrations prepared by guests from universities from various cities, including Poznań, Gdańsk, Warsaw, Lódź, Cracow, Szczecin, Opole, and Wrocław. The presentations were interactive, so everyone had the opportunity to see how the experiments work.

During the demonstration delivered by Anna Wróbel, PhD from Wrocław University of Science and Technology, the participants checked whether it is in fact possible to deceive only our eyes as opposed to our brains. The scientist talked about how to depict phenomena connected with vision and explained the issues of perceptual learning, change blindness, and perceptual rivalry. Andrzej Kuczowski, PhD from Gdańsk University of Technology discussed and showed experiments that affect intellect, imagination, and emotions. Associate Professor Anna Hajdusianek along with Paweł Zagożdżon, PhD from the Faculty of Geoengineering, Mining, and Geology showed how an earthquake can be presented by means of an experiment.

The meetings of the Physics Demonstrators' Club were attended not only by the university’s staff but also by teachers and students interested in teaching physics as well as performing demonstrations and experiments.
