We are already past the first-ever inauguration of the academic year at the Doctoral School of Wrocław University of Science and Technology. The institution now delivers education to over 150 people, including twelve foreigners.

The education it provides is free of charge and intended to replace the doctoral studies currently operating at individual faculties. According to the Act, admissions to the school were conducted as a competition following the rules established by the Senate or the scientific council.

- The doctoral school is something completely new, and its standard will largely depend on you. You are now making history as the first doctoral students to learn at it. Today you have joined the academic research community.  A great adventure is ahead of you, one that some of you may have already begun by participating in various scientific projects and winning grants for your research - said Professor Cezary Madryas, Rector of Wrocław University of Science and Technology.

The Doctoral School operates in parallel with the doctoral studies at the faculties, which will be gradually phased out. All doctoral students studying at the Doctoral School receive a scholarship amounting for 37% of a professor’s salary. After the mid-term evaluation, which will take place in 2 years, the scholarship may increase to 57% of the professor's salary.

Over 150 people, including twelve foreigners from countries including Portugal, Ukraine, China, and India, started their studies at the Doctoral School. 23 people will be educated under the "Implementation PhDs" programme.

The courses are organised into twelve scientific disciplines. Most of the doctoral students are pursuing their studies in chemical sciences, automatics, electronics, and electrical engineering, as well as technical informatics and telecommunications.

- As far as our work goes, we count on the strong support of not only the authorities, employees, and supervisors of particular fields of science but also the doctoral students themselves. It is so because the standard of the school depends on our joint commitment. As new doctoral students, you don’t have to worry that this is a completely new structure. You will be guided by perfectly prepared tutors throughout the educational process- said Professor Ryszard Gonczarek, Dean of the Doctoral School.

Daniel Dobras, President of WUST’s Doctoral Students’ Council, pointed out that the creation of doctoral schools provides young scientists with completely new conditions of education. - It certainly won’t be easy, as everyone will have high expectations of you, but having joined the academic community you can also be demanding of your tutors and supervisors. But also demand a lot of yourselves, work hard, put your whole heart into it, and create the future of Polish science - he added.

A degree programme at the Doctoral School will last 4 years with the possibility of extending it due to conducting long-term research or going on maternity leave, among other things.

The inaugural lecture entitled "Designing new molecular materials” was delivered by Professor Wacław Andrzej Sokalski.
