Jonas Al-Hadadad, a PhD student at the Faculty of Mathematics, has won a competition for the best master's thesis in applied mathematics organised by WUST and The Bank of New York Mellon (BNY Mellon). The value of the prize was 15 thousand PLN
The competition, announced in August, was open to all students who in the years 2017-2018 wrote their master's thesis on applied mathematics setting out to solve problems related to financial mathematics or financial engineering. The competition was the first result of a cooperation agreement signed in 2017 by WUST and BNY Mellon.
The jury, comprising representatives of the university, people involved with the Hugo Steinhaus Centre, and employees of BNY Mellon, evaluated the works entered in the competition in terms of originality of the idea, mathematical correctness, and the possibility of putting solutions into practice.
Eventually, the main prize went to Jonas Al-Hadad, this year's graduate of Applied Mathematics, for his thesis entitled "Pricing of American Options: Single and Double Continuation Region”. The winner received 15 thousand PLN in prize money. Jonas Al-Hadad is currently a doctoral student at the Faculty of Mathematics under the project named "InterDok - Interdisciplinary Doctoral Programmes at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology".
The main prize, certificate of merit, and statuette were handed in to the laureate by Glen Ashbrooke, Director of BNY Mellon Poland Bank at the Celebration of Wroclaw University of Science and Technology.
The second and third place in the competition were also taken by WUST graduates of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics. Weronika Białecka received 10 thousand PLN for her master's thesis entitled: "Application of Weighted Distributions to Modelling Operational Risk”, while Joanna Kuprowska's master thesis "Comparison of Different Models of Credit Scoring", winning the third place, was awarded 5 thousand PLN.
