A visit from a famous Japanese architect. Shigeru Ban to deliver a lecture as part of the ISS

Shigeru Ban, a world-renowned Japanese architect and winner of the Pritzker Prize will be the first speaker to deliver a lecture after the summer break as part of Wrocław Techs Interdisciplinary Scientific Seminar. At Wrocław University of Science and Technology, he will talk about issues including architectural designs made with victims of natural disasters and war in mind.

The lecture, entitled “Works and Humanitarian Activities”, will be held on September 27 at Wrocław Tech’s Congress Centre (building. D-20, ul. Janiszewskiego 8), at 5 pm. Admission is open to the public, but advance registration via Evenea is mandatory.

shigeru_ban.jpgShigeru Ban graduated from the Southern California Institute of Architecture and Cooper Union School of Architecture. He became known as an architect who used paper and cardboard to develop his structures It is from these materials that he creates buildings that give shelter to those affected by natural disasters or wars, among other uses.

In 2014, he was awarded the Pritzker Prize – the most prestigious accolade in the world of contemporary architecture. The paper partition system he developed was used after the Niigata (Japan) and Haiti earthquakes, among other disaster locations. More recently, Shigeru Ban was involved in the construction of shelters for Ukrainian refugees, built in Chełm and Wrocław by teams comprising students from Wrocław Tech and the Technical University Of Lublin as well as volunteers.

The prominent architect will be visiting Poland, where his stay is co-organised by Geberit, and Ukraine in September in connection with the planned production of houses for Ukrainians. In Wrocław, Shigeru Ban will give a lecture as part of the ISS series, but will also meet with project authors from an aid unit set up to support people affected by hostilities in Ukraine.
